For many of us, hands-free shoes are a luxury. For others, they’re a necessity.
Here at Kizik, we’re proud to support Autism Awareness Month and showcase the stories of those whose lives we’ve impacted.
More than 5.4 million adults and 1 in 36 children in the U.S. are living with autism today, and we’re on a mission to empower these individuals.
For those with autism, certain tasks that seem simple to others may be difficult if not impossible—like tying your shoes. We’re breaking down that barrier and getting personal about it. Here are the stories of Kizik employees who experience life with autism every day.
Unlocking independence
With Kiziks, a little boy who needs help putting on his shoes can go outside and play all by himself, whenever he wants. While it may seem like a small victory to some, it’s a newfound level of independence that changes everything for him and his family.
“Him being able to put his own shoes on, open the door, go outside, swing, and come back in has been a huge benefit for us,” says Kizik web manager Chris Fry, whose son has autism and struggles with his speech and motor skills.
That’s what we’re all about: creating experiences that have the power to change lives. After all, it’s not a shoe; it’s a feeling.
“If I could have had this as an eight- or nine-year-old, I can guarantee I probably would have gone to school more days,” explains Kizik social media manager Peyton Dalley, who describes herself as having autism.
Creating comfort
Those living with autism may be highly sensitive and find normal shoes physically uncomfortable or visually overwhelming. Kizik’s answer to this is to create super-comfortable shoes that come in tons of sizes and colors, so there truly is something for everyone.
“The inner stitching doesn’t hit my foot weird, and as an adult with high sensitivities as well as autism, that is something that I very much struggle with,” Peyton says.
With extra cushioning, support, and shock absorption, Kizik shoes are made with four-way stretch uppers to ensure the perfect fit. An added bonus? The knitted material makes them extra breathable too (great for preventing sweaty feet).
Fostering inclusivity
When we say our shoes are for everyone, we mean it—whether you’re a busy mom slipping into your sneakers on the go, or you’re living with a disability and have trouble tying your shoes, Kizik is for you.
We’re here to level (up) the playing field with truly hands-free technology that benefits us all.
The difference between Kiziks and specially-designed adaptive shoes? Kiziks look as good as they feel. They’re the great equalizer of footwear, you might say.
No matter who you are, you can look good and feel good while wearing them, and that’s what we’re all about.
Autism Awareness Month hits close to home for a few of us here at Kizik, and we’re handing the megaphone to those who experience life with autism every day. Because who better to share how something as simple as a hands-free shoe can truly change a life? Here are their stories. They’re pretty powerful.
